And now for something completely different…

I love photography. Period. (as the americans would say)

I love taking photos of things that catch my eye. I love that my friends know that I love taking photos of anything and everything, it often provides my with some unique opportunities! This particular set of photos being a shining example…

A close family member recently invited me along to the Prescott Speed Hill Climb, a World renowned event and home of the Bugatti Owners Club…. A opportunity not to be missed! Motorsport is an area of photography i’d always thought of as beyond my means… the need for a huge fast zoom lens, and having the right contacts to get you to within a few hundred feet of the action never really appealed…

However, I am not one to look the proverbial gift horse in the mouth…

I arrived on the practice day full of nervous energy, having never been along to anything like it I really didn’t know what to expect. What greeted me was a cacophony of engines and a plethora of racing cars and indeed racing drivers who appeared to have been plucked from the 1930′s… Where to start…. I had no idea. It was quite overwhelming to say the least, over 250 beautiful, vintage racing cars awaited me in the paddock. Luckily I had a knowledgable guide with me and a program of the days events, but more importantly, a list of the cars involved! I would never have remembered all the details otherwise!

I wanted to try and capture a sense of the occasion more than anything. There were a LOT of photographers around sporting some amazing pieces of kit who obviously knew the best corners to get the most dynamic shots, and they arrived early. And they were not going to relinquish their postions for anyone! This was fine with me, I spent a lot of time walking around the paddock before heading out and capturing the action on the track.

The day was a wonderful success and I was very happy with the images I got. My friend who was racing the Bugatti shown in the photos also did a pretty good job during practice… It is him I need to thank for the tickets! Not sure of his final race times on the Sunday, but I’m sure he was right up there with the top times!

Feel free to post your times here Ed!

Motorsport, and especially vintage car racing is something I would recommend to every photographer. You dont need the fancy gear so long as you can have a unique take on things! Panning is also a good technique to practice!

Enjoy the photos…

These photo’s are great! I love the action shots, they must have been very difficult to capture. I hope you get a chance to bring the lens you used to a capoeira event. also the guy in picture 7 is very short isn’t he!
