Ipod Photo Sequence – Tutorial

Have you, like me, ever wanted to re-create the visual awesomeness of those funky ipod adverts from a few years back? You remember the ones with the silhouettes in all sorts of weird and wonderful shapes? I was recently asked by a friend to help design a t-shirt along these very lines and I was eager to accept! He already had the concept in mind. It was to be several silhouetted images in a row depicting a cartwheel sequence. Sounds simple when you say it like that! I really enjoyed the whole process and I figured it’s been a while since I...

Would you use it?

The latest offering from Nikon is a somewhat odd shaped new camera grip, it instantly turns your camera into something resembling a handgun… Do we photographers need to give the Police anymore reason to hate us? Now i’m all for having a grip on your camera, i’ve not taken mine off in two years, but i’m not sure how well this would catch on. Back to the drawing board Nikon… Here is the link with some images, and comedy google...

What is the best camera?

The Best Camera Is The One That’s With You. Or so says Chase Jarvis. Its also a 3 part “ecosystem” created by the aforementioned photographer, comprising of an Iphone App, that contains a very funky set of filters you can apply directly to the image in-phone allowing users to create images they can then share with the wider web in the thriving online community made of images taken on iphones from around the World! There is also a book which I have not been able to check out yet… The concept is simple. Sometimes you dont...

Some Time Away…

Well, i’ve been away for a little while, but i’m now back to stay and i’ve got a new project to get my teeth into! This will also go some way to explaining the recent lack of activity on this site ! My first child was born almost a week ago now, and after some consideration and after chatting to fellow photographers and doting fathers alike, i’ve decided to record the first year of her life in photos with a 365 project… This basically involves taking one photo everyday for a year, the challenge comes in making it...

Strobox

Have you ever seen an amazing photo in a magazine and wondered just how it was lit?? Strobox is a website i’ve just discovered, but I think will rapidly become one of my most valuable tools. As a photographer who is always on the look out for new ideas, this site has sent my brain into meltdown, (not to mention my photography gear wishlist…) The basic premise behind the site is to share the  knowledge of how to light photos. Simple. It is a fantastically simple idea and works  really well for pro and amateur photographer alike,...

On my travels around NYC recently I found myself wandering into a cool looking diner in the Meatpacking district for a late breakfast (I guess the Americans would call it brunch… not me…) The diner was not-so-originally called Gansvoort 69 and is located on, you guessed it, Gansvoort St!  This place looked like any other diner from the outside, but when I walked in and settled into my seat I noticed the artwork adorning the walls… A set of photos lined the walls, each one larger than life, and each one seemed to hint...

Tutorial: How to tilt & shift

This is a quick tutorial on how to apply tilt and shift settings to your pictures, you can see the effects in the tilt and shift gallery later on in the post… Step 1: Photo Selection When choosing a photograph for the tilt-shift effect, bear in mind that you want to give the impression of a miniature model. Miniature models are usually viewed from above so try and choose a photo with an elevated viewpoint. Buildings, roads, traffic and railways are excellent choices but make sure there is a reasonable wide angle of view. insert...
