Its been a few weeks now since I wrote the first of my NewYork pieces, and also a few weeks since I looked through my NY pictures! Scandalous! So having sat down at my computer now I once again feel compelled to continue the series of photos, and to try and convince you all of the wonder that is the Big Apple!
The order of the photos may become a bit rambling, but I’l try to keep some order to it all…
Day 3
After a relaxing day in the park we decided to get our walking shoes on and hit the streets! For those of you that have ever seen the Empire State Building from ground level, you will know what a true behemoth it is! It is also one of the most photographed buildings in the World! So to try and get a unique take on it was always going to be tough… I spent quite a while walking round backstreets crossing form on side of the road to the other, taking lots of shots, and although some were quite unique, they were also crap…. So having wasted half an hour or so I went for quite a simple shot, using my fisheye to try to get the whole thing in was itself a challenge, but I’m really happy with the result, especially as Lightroom 3 now offers a lens correction tool which I used to straighten out the verticals, making a good shot even better!
After the overwhelming nature of the ESB we headed out to a new public park which was only recently opened on Manhattans west side. The Highline is a converted elevated railroad which runs for several blocks along the waterfront ending up in the Meatpacking district. It provides an incredibly serene and different experience of New York and was one of my highlights of the trip! Check out the website for more details, its well worth a look if you’re in the area!
The other pictures in the above set were taken at the annual Egg Rolls & Egg Creams festival, a very bizarre Chinese/Jewish festival, there was all sorts of craziness going on, and although the music wasn’t exactly to our taste, it was an incredibly welcoming atmosphere! I got chatting to several locals who were more than keen to tell me the history of the festival and the area, if you want to know more they also have a website, Museum @ Eldridge St
Day 4
This is the day when we really started upping our distances covered! We took a metro to the Financial District and set off on foot to cross the Brooklyn Bridge, as bridges go, its a pretty good one! It was also an incredibly hot day with very little shade, and so despite my wanting to hang around until I was able to get the shot I wanted with no people in view, I had to make do with what I could get! Although after an intense photoshop session I was able to remove the offending tourists who were “spoiling” my shot, I’ve included both shots here! Can you tell the difference??
There is a very famous bookshop in DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass – took me while to figure out too!) called powerhouse books, and it stocks every conceivable book on photography you could imagine! So I was easily able to lose an hour just flicking through the pages getting inspiration and ideas from all kinds of sources!
After this brief break we hopped on a train and headed out to Coney Island… I had only seen places like this in films before and it was a lot to take in! Imagine the golden era of the carnival frozen in time and then added a sheen of modern day tackiness all around it! Thats not to say I didn’t enjoy it, there were some brilliant photo opportunities and sights to be seen! (at least once in your life…)
This seems like as good a place to leave it as any… mainly because the next days photos came thick and fast and I’m not sure how long your attention span is good for…
Until next time..
Have a nice day!

Where is that wonder wheel? Is that Coney Island??
K
It sure is, and its over 90 years old! How scary is that!
I never went to Coney – that’s where “The Warriors” come from so have wanted to go there for years.
did you HDR that badboy?
K*
HDR for me is still th final frontier… Is omething i’ve dabbled with before but never mastered, so no, this particular image just benefitted from a boost to the colours, which i guess in way does make it HDR-like, although its missing the real standout quality you get a from a true HDR done well… watch this space though! I’m sure HDR will be one of my projects soon enough!
