New York Vertical

“New York is New York is New York”

Wolfgang Joop  - Industrial Designer

Where to start. I just got back and already I feel like a part of me is missing . I never though a city would have such a profound effect on me. I went there for a holiday, to relax, take in the sights and sounds, and (obviously) get some good pictures. What I actually found was inspiration. Everywhere.

So I reiterate, where to start, how to sum up my experiences in a few paragraphs and photos? Well, simply put, it can’t be done! Thats why I have decided to do a whole series of posts on the different aspects and images of the trip, along with the photographers I encountered along the way.

In truth I first found New York totally overwhelming, I’m sure i’m not the first, but while visiting the Guggenheim I found a book which started to change the way I looked at the city. The book is called New York Vertical by Horst Haman, and I would seriously recommend it! Its about 10 year old and is just a beautiful collection of photos, mostly of the cities many skyscrapers, taken with a Linhof Technorama panoramic camera turned upright.

The book starts with a quote; “A mind that is stretched to a new idea, never returns to its original dimension.” And without wanting to get too gushy, this book changed my perspective on things. I now had more of a focus, I have always been interested in architecture in photography and now I realise that there are many many others who share this passion. I’m not claiming that my images are even on any sort of par with Horst Hamans original work, (he spent four years researching and compiling the photos for the book) but if nothing else it gave me something to aim for!

The images in my gallery contain some very similar pictures to those in the book, some photos can never be replicated due to the september 11th attacks, some photos of buildings that were not even built when Horst Haman was creating this book. I am very happy with the pictures I got and personally think they represent some of my best so far, but thats not ultimately for me to decide.

I hope you enjoy the pictures I captured, if you like them, I would seriously suggest you buy the Horst Haman book and see how a professional does it!

Comments and feedback ALWAYS appreciated!

  1. The photos across the bridge are unreal. They feel hallucincogenic. Amazing job.

  2. Pictures are great and so is the site. I’m going to NY in late August so these are particularly inspiring. Taking my camera but don’t expect to come back with pics this good. Wide angle lens? 10mm? Tripod? Any tips….??

It all depends on what you’re plannign on shooting while you’re there! I didnt bother with a tripod as we were walking around a LOT! I took my kit lens, 18-105mm and a 15mm fisheye which i used for the brooklyn bridge shots!

If i’d have had a 10mm lens i would have definitely taken it though! As for other tips, look up The Highline, its a new elevated park in the meatpacking district, it offers some really unique viewpoints of the city and it was one of my highlights! Most of all, have a wicked time! I’d go back tomorrow! :-)
